I am not really the type who chooses things just because they are sitting on the shelf, easy, convenient, already in my hand at the pharmacy. From the start I wanted to understand what I was putting on him. So I read. Ingredient lists, other mothers' experiences, anything that helped me feel like I actually knew what I was choosing. Some evenings that meant an hour longer than I planned, but if it means he is comfortable in his own skin, it is time I am happy to give.
Reading a lot does not mean getting it right every time, though. Some products look wonderful on paper, all the right words, all the right promises, and then in real life something is just slightly off. That is simply what happens when you are dealing with a small person whose skin has opinions of its own. What helps me most is simply watching him. A little redness that was not there yesterday, the way he touches his cheek a certain way when something bothers him, small things I would probably have missed if I was not paying attention with my whole heart.
So this list comes straight from what I actually reach for. Number one on it is Aveeno, my true favorite. It is American though, and buying it here in Croatia became more trouble than it was worth, so we moved on. Right now we are using Uriage and I am genuinely happy with it. I am also about to start Mabyen's spray on his body, while keeping Uriage for his face. This is not a theoretical list, and most of what I write about here comes from our own actual experience, tested on him, not just researched on paper.
I loved Aveeno on him, white cast and all, he looked like a tiny Dracula some mornings, though with his fair skin nobody really noticed.
Each score below weighs the same three things I check on him every single time: what is actually in it, how it feels and spreads on real skin, and whether it holds up once he is sweaty, wet, and running away from me.

That is where we stand for now. Eight sunscreens, tried, tested, argued over in my own head more times than I want to admit. This list will keep changing as we try new ones, so if you come back in a few months and something has moved, that is exactly why.
For now, Uriage stays on his face, Mabyen's spray is about to take over his body, and Aveeno sits quietly in the drawer as the one I still miss every time I see the price of shipping it here.
What is the one sunscreen that actually worked for your toddler's skin? I would really love to know, especially if his skin sounds anything like Ian's.
